Victorian London
Shadows on Baker Street
Plot:
London, 1891. Twelve years after printer Edgar Rourke was hanged for murder, doubts still surround the scientific evidence that condemned him. Detective Quill has gathered an uneasy group of police officers, scholars, journalists, reformers, tradespeople, and figures from London’s underworld at the Montague Rooms near Baker Street.
Quill promises to reveal proof that Rourke was innocent—and expose the person responsible for altering the evidence. But before he can name them, the gas lamps are lowered for a magic-lantern presentation, tea is served, and Quill collapses during the final toast.
With the doors closed and everyone hiding secrets of their own, the guests must question one another, examine the evidence, and reconstruct the crucial minutes before Quill’s death. Can they uncover who turned a Victorian evening of tea and testimony into murder before the truth is buried again?

Most groups take 90–180 minutes. Hosts can shorten the discussion periods for a faster 90-minute version.
The game has a PG-13 tone and is best suited to adults and older teenagers. It includes murder, poisoning, secrets, and wrongful conviction, but no graphic content.
The host should assign characters, send the pre-party information, print or organize the files, separate the evidence by act, and read through the host guide before the event.
Not at all. Players can perform their character enthusiastically or simply read their information, ask questions, and join the investigation at their own comfort level.
Costumes are optional, but Victorian-inspired clothing can make the evening more immersive. Simple waistcoats, blouses, hats, shawls, and period-style accessories work perfectly.
The difficulty is medium-hard. Players solve the case by comparing motives, alibis, timelines, and evidence rather than using specialist historical or scientific knowledge.
No. The mystery works with dinner, drinks, snacks, afternoon tea, or as a standalone party activity.

Reviews from Real Detectives
"The Greed & Gouda kit turned our ordinary Saturday dinner into a full-blown Wall Street whodunit. The host script was fool-proof — even for first-timers. Our guests are already begging for the next game night!"
"I needed a fresh idea for our remote team social. The mystery kept 24 coworkers laughing and collaborating for two solid hours. HR is making this a standing tradition."
"We ran the mystery for my daughter's birthday on Zoom. The story was clean, the clues were challenging, and setup took less than an hour. Parents messaged me asking where to buy their own kit."
"I've purchased mystery kits from three other sites. None matched the polish of Capital of Mystery. Instant downloads, gorgeous PDFs, and clear Host vs. Player sections — zero spoilers. Five stars."
"We hosted the 1920s Speakeasy game for a birthday dinner and everyone stayed in character longer than expected. The evidence cards made the night feel organized but still gave everyone room to improvise."
"The game worked perfectly for our group of 18. I loved that the instructions were clear, the roles felt balanced, and even quieter guests had useful secrets and clues to share."
"I was nervous about hosting for the first time, but the host guide made it easy. We printed everything the same afternoon and played that night. The final reveal got a huge reaction."
