THE SETTING

Grand Railway Mystery

Luxurious Orion Express

Plot:

## The Plot

Europe, 1936. The magnificent Orion Express is racing through the Belladonna mountain route, carrying diplomats, performers, financiers, railway officials, and society figures toward the signing of a celebrated international railway agreement.

The journey’s powerful host, railway magnate Augustus Vane, has promised prosperity and a glittering new future. Behind the polished brass and elegant dining service, however, Vane has spent the evening threatening passengers, exposing secrets, and reminding everyone how much he knows about their private lives.

At 00:15, Vane is expected to enter the observation salon carrying the signed agreement and the priceless Star of Orion sapphire.

He never arrives.

Following a violent tunnel brake test, Vane is discovered dead inside his private sleeping compartment. The door was bolted from within, the window was sealed, and his only key remained in his pocket. The sapphire has vanished, a threatening note lies beneath a champagne glass, and a silver watch appears to record the moment of death.

Yet several passengers insist they saw Vane walking through the dining car after he was supposedly already dead.

With the train unable to reach the authorities before dawn, every guest becomes both investigator and suspect. Players must step into character, reveal carefully guarded secrets, question one another, compare timelines, examine the evidence, and determine whether the locked-room murder, the missing sapphire, and the impossible sighting are parts of one elaborate plan—or several dangerous deceptions unfolding at once.

Mystery Game FAQS

What age group is the game suitable for?

It is best suited to adults and older teenagers who enjoy role-playing, social deduction, and detailed mystery stories.

Does the host need to play a character?

The host may focus entirely on managing the game, revealing evidence, and reading the narration. Because the host has access to the solution, it is best for them not to compete in solving the mystery.

Do guests need costumes?

Costumes are optional, but 1930s-inspired clothing makes the experience more immersive. Guests can use simple items such as hats, suspenders, pearls, evening dresses, scarves, waistcoats, or jackets.

Is the mystery difficult?

The game has a medium-hard difficulty level. Players solve it by comparing timelines, questioning one another, examining evidence, and separating the murder from several convincing red herrings.

Is the game solvable with only four players?

Yes. The four core characters contain everything required to solve the mystery fairly. Additional characters provide extra secrets, atmosphere, clues, and alternative theories but are not required.

Can the game be played without a formal dinner?

Yes. It works equally well as a dinner party, drinks-and-snacks evening, birthday activity, family gathering, or team social event.

Does the game use complicated puzzles or codes?

The main challenge is detective reasoning rather than solving standalone riddles. Players compare evidence, motives, access, witness statements, and an overlapping timeline.

Do I need special decorations or props?

No. The printable materials are enough to play. Optional additions such as warm lighting, vintage luggage, champagne glasses, railway signs, jazz music, or 1930s accessories can enhance the atmosphere.

Is the game suitable for a corporate event?

Yes. It works well for team socials, staff parties, retreats, and group celebrations. It encourages conversation, observation, collaboration, and friendly competition.
