THE SETTING

Halloween Phantoms & False Alibis

Halloween Murder Mystery

Plot:

On Halloween night, the doors of the long-shuttered Ravenscroft Manor open for an exclusive candlelit séance.

The evening’s host, wealthy spiritualist patron Evelyn Blackwood, has gathered an unusual company of relatives, household staff, scholars, performers, occult enthusiasts, and former associates. Officially, Evelyn intends to contact the spirits of her deceased parents. In truth, she has spent months investigating the people around her—and has uncovered forged records, secret debts, false inheritances, fraudulent séances, stolen valuables, and betrayals that could destroy several reputations.

Before the séance begins, Evelyn makes a chilling promise: before the night is over, she will expose “the hand behind the haunting.”

At precisely 9:07 p.m., the gramophone falters. Three knocks sound from inside the wall. The talking-board planchette begins to move—and every candle in the parlour suddenly goes dark.

When the light returns, Evelyn is lying motionless beside the séance table, her fallen absinthe glass near her hand.

She has been murdered.

A violent storm has sealed the roads, the manor doors remain locked, and no stranger could have entered or escaped. The killer is one of the assembled guests, hiding behind a carefully prepared alibi and one of the many secrets buried within Ravenscroft Manor.

Players must mingle, question suspects, exchange clues, challenge contradictions, and separate genuine evidence from theatrical supernatural distractions. But there is one final twist: the host secretly chooses from four possible killer versions before the game begins, and even the guilty player does not discover the truth until the sealed final reveal.

Can your guests uncover the motive, trace the murder method, and identify who silenced Evelyn before Ravenscroft Manor claims another secret?

Capital of Mystery

How it plays:

Guests receive character folios filled with secrets, objectives, suspicions, and clues. Across three acts, players mingle freely, question one another, trade information, examine evidence, and build a case using motive, means, and opportunity. Everyone then submits a private final accusation before the host reveals the chosen solution. Even the killer does not know their identity until the sealed confession is opened.

Perfect for:

Perfect for Halloween parties, dinner parties, family gatherings, friend groups, team socials, costume parties, and immersive mystery nights for 4–30 players.

Mystery Game FAQS

Is the game suitable for both small and large groups?

Yes. The four essential suspects are always included, while additional characters expand the gossip, suspicions, and social interaction for larger groups.

Does the killer know they are the killer?

No. The guilty player receives the same type of version-neutral character folio as everyone else and does not discover the truth until the host announces the solution and hands over the sealed confession page.

Is this a scripted game?

No. This is a freeform mingling and deduction game. Players use goals, secrets, clues, suspicions, and conversation prompts rather than reading repetitive scripted dialogue.

Is the victim played by a guest?

No. Evelyn Blackwood is a non-player character, so every guest receives an active suspect or investigator role.

Is the game replayable?

Yes. The host can choose from four different killer versions, each with its own motive, method, evidence pair, solution guide, and confession page.

What happens during the game?

Players introduce their characters, open one act at a time, mingle freely, question one another, trade information, examine evidence, challenge alibis, and submit a private final accusation.

Do I need special props?

No special props are required. The printable materials are enough to run the game. Candles, old books, dark tablecloths, and Victorian-style decorations can be added for atmosphere.

Is the game suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is designed to be first-time-host friendly, with clear rules, act-by-act instructions, structured evidence reveals, and flexible conversation prompts.

What should guests wear?

Victorian Gothic, formal mourning attire, séance-inspired costumes, period clothing, or elegant Halloween outfits all work well. Costumes are encouraged but not required.
