THE SETTING

Halloween Dark Autumn

Folk-Horror

Plot:

Every Halloween, the isolated village of Hollowbrook gathers for the ancient Harvest Feast, a lantern-lit tradition said to protect the fields, orchards, and families through the coming winter. At the heart of the celebration is the ceremonial Pumpkin King or Pumpkin Queen, chosen to lead the procession through the pumpkin maze and bless the midnight feast beneath the old harvest tree.

This year, the honour belongs to Edith or Edmund, the keeper of the communal granary. But behind the music, pumpkins, cider, and candlelight, Hollowbrook is hiding a dangerous secret. Grain has gone missing. Village records have been altered. Protected farmland has been quietly negotiated away. And the crowned keeper has discovered proof.

During the feast, Edith or Edmund announces that the missing ledger pages have been found. Before midnight, the guilty names will be revealed.

The announcement chills the room.

Some villagers fear ruin. Others fear prison, disgrace, or the loss of everything they have worked to protect. When the lantern procession enters the pumpkin maze, the crowned figure walks ahead as tradition demands—but never returns.

Moments later, Edith or Edmund is found dead beneath the ancient harvest tree. A ceremonial sickle lies nearby. A carved pumpkin bears the mark of the Harvest Spirit. The scene looks like an old ritual sacrifice.

But the truth is far more human.

Players must question the villagers of Hollowbrook, uncover hidden motives, examine evidence, expose false alibis, and decide who turned the village’s most sacred harvest tradition into murder.

Capital of Mystery

How it plays:

This is a freeform murder mystery game where players take on the roles of villagers at Hollowbrook’s Harvest Feast. Each player receives a character folio with secrets, clues, suspicions, and conversation prompts. Across three Acts, players mingle, question each other, trade information, examine evidence cards, and build a final accusation.

The host reveals new evidence each Act, guiding the group toward the final ballot. Players must name the killer, motive, method, and opportunity before the sealed confession reveal.

Perfect for:

Perfect for Halloween parties, autumn dinner parties, harvest-themed gatherings, family game nights, cozy mystery nights, and groups who enjoy social deduction, roleplay, secrets, and dramatic reveals.

Works for 4–30 players and is ideal for hosts who want a printable, atmospheric, easy-to-run murder mystery with a dark autumn folk-horror theme.

Mystery Game FAQS

Can the host play too?

Yes. The host can play as long as they do not read the solution guide or sealed confession before the reveal. For the easiest experience, the host should choose and seal one killer version before play, then avoid reading the ending.

Does the killer know they are the killer?

No. The killer plays normally and does not know they are guilty until the final reveal. After all ballots are collected, the host gives the chosen sealed confession page to the killer.

Is the game replayable?

Yes. The game includes four different killer versions, so you can replay it with a different solution. The host chooses one version before the game and uses only that version’s evidence and reveal page.

Is this a scripted game?

No. This is a freeform social deduction mystery. Players receive character folios with secrets, clues, suspicions, and conversation prompts, but they speak naturally, question each other, and decide what to reveal or hide.

Do I need to prepare anything before the party?

Yes, but setup is simple. Choose one killer version, print the matching evidence and confession page, assign characters, and arrange the evidence by Act. The host guide explains everything step by step.

Is this game suitable for beginners?

Yes. The game is designed to be easy for a first-time host to run, with clear instructions, act-by-act guidance, and printable materials.

Is the game scary?

The theme is eerie and atmospheric, with dark autumn folklore and a staged ritual mystery, but it is not graphic or extreme horror.

Do players need costumes?

Costumes are optional but encouraged. Rustic autumn, village harvest, folk-horror, lantern festival, and historical rural costumes all work well.

What kind of party is this best for?

It is perfect for Halloween parties, autumn dinner parties, harvest-themed gatherings, cozy mystery nights, family game nights, and groups who enjoy secrets, roleplay, and dramatic reveals.
